Here’s some recent Suncoast area news:
ARTISTIC SEASON : The seventh Season Of Sculpture, a biennial exhibition of monumental artworks along the Sarasota bayfront, is on display through May 30. “Shared Ground: Eight Artists, Eighteen Installations” includes works from international and local artists. PUBLIC PIANOS : Plans are quickly moving ahead for the purchase, decoration and placement of up to six spinet pianos outside downtown Sarasota establishments that would be available for anyone passing by to play during business hours. The project is being overseen by the Arts and Cultural Alliance of Sarasota. Public pianos have been successfully placed in other cities internationally since British artist Luke Jerram created his first “Play Me, I’m Yours” installation in 2008. HOUSING STARTS ON THE RISE : Builders throughout Southwest Florida broke ground on new homes at a rapid pace in the month of October to meet buyer demand. This is the latest indicator of a robust housing recovery. Permits are up 41% for the year! Click here to read more: New home construction surges
PENTATHLON TRIUMPH : The Sarasota-Manatee area will host three modern pentathlon events starting next year. The area was selected over cities including Cairo, Rome, Buenos Aires and Acapulco. Southwest Florida will be the first region in the U.S. to host a world cup pentathlon final. Most of the events will be held at Nathan Benderson Park, which was recently selected as the site of the 2017 World Rowing Championships. There’s more after the jump: Region draws one more world-class sport
BATTLE OVER THE BEACHES : Sarasota’s two main beaches: Lido and Siesta (the nation’s #1 beach) are separated by an inlet of water called Big Sarasota Pass. A plan to dredge Big Sarasota Pass could disrupt the supply of white sand to Siesta Key beaches and ruin a county park at the south end of Lido, says the county’s former environmental services director. The plan is to pump sand from a shoal, or sandbar, in Big Pass onto a critically eroded shoreline to the north on Lido Key, where the Gulf threatens condos and hotels. It would mark the first time Big Pass has ever been dredged. The plan also calls for erecting three rock structures, called groins, on the South Lido beach to keep sand from entering the pass.
